Great Pathway Youth Development Programme

Great Pathway Youth Development programme staff work with young people to assist them to gain the skills to understand the risks their family lifestyles place them in and give them the confidence to make better decisions regarding their actions despite what their peers and whanau are doing.

Recognising the proven fact that the earlier interventions are put in place for child offenders the more effective the outcomes will be, our target audience are ‘At Risk Children’ in the Western Bay of Plenty under the age of 14 years.

The need for our services can be seen through Police Youth offending statistics, feedback from education providers and other community organisations who all confirm there is a huge need for groups who will work with child offenders and their families and that there are currently few organisations in the Western Bay of Plenty who are willing to work with child offenders at this point in time.

The difference to our programme is that we support the child to personally develop in education, sport, artistically or musically based on their own individual strengths and or interests.

Geographically GPYD has reached out to families in Tauranga/Mt Maunganui and from Paengaroa to Katikati.  Each area can bring its own challenges, resource wise and culturally.  This in turn calls for an ‘outside the square’ approach to the issues facing these children and their whanau, keeping in mind that any changes need to be sustainable and within reach of the families you are working with.
